Checking the questions (and answers) on this page before you make an inquiry about volunteering for WiredSafety is an enormous help to us as often, a question that someone else has raised is similar to your own. If you absolutely cannot find the answer, please visit the Wired-Ed section at our Interactive forum or use our online contact form.
I just joined WiredSafety, and some of the classes are very informative, can I invite my neighbor/friend/sister to take some of these?
All of our classes, except those on the schedule that are marked with a % (Invitation only) are open to anyone, WiredSafety member or not.
How do I get to class?
- If you use mIRC, you can get to classes by typing /server irc.wiredsafety.org and then joining one of the classroom channels.
- Follow this link to get to our classes using the JAVA page >>
I can't figure out the time differences. HELP!!
The class schedule page contains information about time zones as well as links to help you convert your time zone to the scheduled class times.
I'm not used to using IRC, is there a place I can go to practice?
A really good place to go is the #WiredSafety channel (chat room) on WiredSafety or DalNet. We have lots of very friendly and helpful channel ops there, and they can help you "get your feet". You get there the same way you get to classes, except the channel name is #WiredSafety.
Can I just read over the class texts to get get credit?
Nope, you have to come keep us company. :) We like to get to know you, and would like for you to get to know us too. The best way to do that is to meet us in class, and in the WiredSafety channels (chat rooms).
I live in a different time zone, and I never see classes at times that I can take them. Will you schedule classes later at night?
We offer classes at all hours of the day and night so that people in all time zones can find a time they can attend.
There is no necessity to attend the required classes quickly...we like you to do your classes and also have time to get to know us, and us you, so you don't have to rush.
If, after a couple weeks you are still missing classes, contact the to set up a time to meet for those classes you just can't get any other way.
I'd like to be an instructor, how do I join the team?
Wonderful!! Contact the and set up a time to talk about joining :-)
I have an idea for a new class, who do I talk to?
Send your suggestions and an outline of the class to the
Is there a way to record the class, so I can go back and read it again later?
If you are using an IRC client such as mIRC or pIRCh, you can log the class by typing /log on. A text copy of the entire class will be stored in your mIRC or Pirch directory.
I'm a new member of WiredSafety, and I need to know who keeps track of what classes I've taken.
If you have questions about your attendance record, contact who records attendance by your nick and WP ID number. We also suggest you keep track, with date, instructor name and logs until you are sure your attendance has been officially recorded.
I don't think I have an ID# - where do I get one? Do I still get credit for classes I've already taken?
If you have sent in your WiredSafety volunteer application but have not yet received your Welcome Letter with your ID number, you will still receive credit for the classes you have taken only if you have completed the Welcome to WiredPatrol class. This class is a mandoraty first class for all members and no credit will be given for other classes unless you have first taken the Welcome Class. We will match your nickname to your number in our database when you receive your number.
I finished all of my required classes and I still haven't heard from anyone. What should I do?
When you have completed all the required classes, please notify the Division and verify:
Your official WiredSafety nickname and number.
Your e-mail address.
Any other information that may have changed since you first joined.
What divisions/teams you are interested in joining.
If you have a WiredBuddy, they will contact you once your required classes or completed and your police letter is on file. Your WiredBuddy or the volunteer coordinator will notify the appropriate director of the team (or teams!) that you want to work with.
What ARE the required classes for WiredSafety?
The basic classes for ALL volunteers are:
Welcome to WiredSafety!
WiredSafety Wired Intranet
WiredSafety Teams and Divisions
WiredSafety Code of Conduct
WiredSafety Mission StatementIndividual divisions usually have their own required classes also.
Why do I never see Ratings 2 on the schedule?
This class is set up with the head of the STAR division. A date and time for you to attend Ratings 2 will be arranged once you have completed the Ratings 1 requirements.
What are the required classes for the teams I joined?
You will have to contact the team leaders in those divisions.
