To volunteer
Step by step guide to volunteering with WiredSafety
This section was created to help you navigate WiredSafety's volunteer application and orientation process. WiredSafety volunteers are required to give a minimum of two hours a week and complete all basic training before being accepted into a team and/or division. Due to the nature of our work, not every appliction will be successful. We reserve the right to discontinue and application if we consider the prospective volunteer unsuitable.
- Please, fill out the WiredSafety volunteer application, selecting your desired division, and submit it online.
- Make sure you also insert your whole given name into the space in the agreement at the bottom of the application.
- We must have your real ISP e-mail address not a cyber remailer or web e-mail address, such as yahoo, iwon, hotmail, etc.
- All U.K. volunteers, with the exception of teens and children, must provide a clearance letter [Data Protection Certificate]. You can proceed with the orientation while we await receipt of the letter.
- We must receive the certificate/statement before you will be allowed to work in the division you have selected.
While waiting for your certificate/statement to arrive here, please DO attend the basic training classes and feel free to attend any others that may interest you. You can e-mail the 4-6 weeks after you mail your certificate/statement stating that you have no criminal convictions.
You must send the original certificate/statement, including your WiredSafety nickname and ID#, either via FAX (preferred) or via air mail to:

or

A "Welcome" e-mail will be sent to you shortly after your application is processed.
Most applicants receive this within 24 hours, but as we said, we are experiencing delays due to the high volume of new volunteers lately.
This letter will include information about what you can expect, a schedule of the upcoming week's classes, information on getting on IRC (our class channels) and the names of members whom you may contact if you have any questions.
If something was missing on your application you may instead receive an e-mail asking for the missing info or clarification.
Steps 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5All new volunteers will have to take online orientation classes, which include information about our mission and code of conduct.
These classes are conducted in our online chat rooms, and will give you a chance to meet some other WiredSafety and make some new friends. Specific information about the classes (where, when, and how to get there) can be found on our Wired-Ed pages.
We encourage you to spend several weeks taking these classes, as well as spending time in the WiredSafety chat rooms - so we can get to know you too :-)
Tutoring can be arranged online, on a one-to-one basis for those who cannot make the scheduled classes.
Steps 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5While you are taking your orientation classes, you can also take two STAR (Site Team And Research) classes, showing you how to rate and review sites. The first class is Ratings 1, and after the class you will be given an assignment of 5 practice sites to rate before you can go on to the next rating class.
Ratings 2 class will be held as soon as you have sent the Ratings 1 practice sites reports to the STAR Director. When you have completed the Ratings 2 assignment of 5 sites, you will be eligible to join STAR.
Please contact star@wiredsafety.org to arrange a day and time to take the Ratings 1 class. Ratings classes can only be given by STAR approved teachers.
You do not need a police clearance letter on file to do the Ratings classes and to join STAR. This gives you an opportunity to actively volunteer in a division whilst waiting for your letter.
Steps 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5When you think you have fulfilled all of your orientation classes (and Safe Sites Team classes if required), please e-mail with your nick and ID # and ask for a printout of your attendance. When you receive this, you will forward it to the . Let them know what teams you wish to join, and they will, in turn, notify the appropriate director of the team (or teams!) that you want to work with.
Some teams and divisions, such as Cyberstalking and Harassment team, are by invitation only. You can request an assignment to that team, but due to security issues and the delicate nature of the work, some of our teams are very careful in choosing team members. Most teams and divisions are open for all volunteers.
At that point, the Director of the division will contact you and welcome you and get you started on any training needed to work with this division, or integrate you into the division or team right away.
Teenangels are specially-trained 13-to-17-years-old volunteers. A program of WiredKids since 1998.
