You are here: Home > Strategic Alliances > Fundraising > Just Between Us Just Between UsOne of the biggest problems we face in teaching teenagers how to be safe, is getting them to listen. They will only listen if they are not "preached to" and see the advice as being relevant to their day-to-day lives. Often they think they know it all, and therefore ignore the basic safety tips. By using teenagers to talk about online safety to other teenagers we solve these problems. They won't consider the advice preaching and what is conveyed and the manner in which it will be conveyed will be relevant--delivered from one teenager to another. Parry Aftab, noted cyberspace lawyer and executive director of wiredpatrol.org, the largest online safety and help program in cyberspace since 1995, has a knack with teenagers. They tend to open up when they talk with her. Through her work with teenagers in schools around the country, she has learned what matters to them, and what doesn't. Through her work with WiredSafety and law enforcement agencies around the world, she has learned how the dark side of the Internet operates, and knows how to advise teens accordingly. Parry has recruited several articulate and thoughtful teenagers to help deliver the message. Together they will discuss their questions, problems they face online and solutions. In an interesting role-play, Parry will also teach them that you can never be really sure who you are chatting with online. The FBI will be lending its television studios in Quantico to film the video. We will need sponsors for the script writing and editing, copying and distribution and promotion of the video. It is contemplated that this video will be made available to schools, libraries and community groups around the United States and in other Internet-active countries.
