How to tell a spam e-mail from a legitimate e-mail
Explanation :: Detection :: Solution :: Prevention
Many people fall prey to e-mail spam for the simple fact that either the e-mails look legitimate or play directly on users' good nature (or their weak points). Identifying spam is often simple but sometimes it arrives very cleverly disguised and it is wise to be vigilant at all times.
Typical spam e-mails will advertise products or services at competitive rates. Others will appear to be messages from "long lost friends" or for a stranger and curiosity often gets the better of users.
Look for e-mails (both from strangers and people you know as their e-mail address may have been spoofed) with spelling mistakes in the subject line, attachments you aren't expecting and exaggerated punctuation (multiple asterisks *** and exclamation marks !!!). Be particularly careful with e-mail that appears to be from a legitimate source (like your bank) that asks you to update your personal information - it is almost certainly a phishing attempt.
