E-mail safety

Reading e-mail headers

Ask Parry! If you ever need to report someone who is stalking you via e-mail or sending you viruses or spam then you will need to find out how to provide something called "Full Headers".

Instructions for some popular e-mail clients appear below.

A normal header looks like this:

From: <maria1@btamail.net.cn>
Subject: Adv: ?????????
Date: Fri, 26 Jul 2002 18:09:39

A full header looks like this:

Received: from mc1-f6.law16.hotmail.com ([65.54.236.13]) by mc1-s9.law16.hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.0.2195.4905); Fri, 26 Jul 2002 18:03:09 -0700
Received: from hotmail.com ([63.232.207.243]) by mc1-f6.law16.hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.0.2195.4905); Fri, 26 Jul 2002 18:01:39 -0700
From: <maria1@btamail.net.cn>
Subject: Adv: ?????????

Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Without full headers there is no reasonable way to trace who really sent the e-mail It is very easy to fake the To and From and ReplyTo fields and, in fact, viruses such as Klez do exactly that. So, when reporting spam, viruses, and so on you need to include Full Headers.
