Computer viruses, worms and Trojans

What they are and what they can do

Trojan horse programsTrojan horses are not actually viruses but - they are often thought of as viruses. They are named after the famous Trojan Horse - an enormous hollow, wooden horse that was left outside the ancient Greek city of Troy by the enemy. The Trojans thought the horse was a gift and brought it inside their city walls but actually, it was a trick and the horse's hollow body contained warriors who captured Troy and ended the Trojan War.

Trojans

Trojan Horse programs cannot replicate themselves (which is why they are not a true virus), instead they are malicious programs that pretend to be something else. They are most often presented as e-mail attachments or downloadable Internet files and as soon as they are run can plant a virus, erase or steal data.
