Background checks
All volunteers, with the exception of teens and children, must provide a clearance letter or letter of good standing from their local police department on the department's letterhead. Our International Division members must contact their division director and are required to submit a police clearance letter as well, or else send in a photo ID and other proof.
There is usually a fee for this although there may be a discount if you let them know it is for volunteer work. The police must confirm the requesting party's identity before providing the letter. Forgery of a police communication carries serious penalties. We believe that in all but our most sensitive divisions, that this security measure is sufficient.
We hope that all volunteers understand that we need to make sure that we keep out known pedophiles and predators.
Law Enforcement employees in good standing and lawyers in good standing do not have to undergo background checks, where background checks are otherwise required. Instead, they must supply a letter from their law enforcement employer or the state board of bar examiners in each state in which they are licensed confirming that they are in good standing.
WiredSafety may terminate any volunteer it believes is not complying with our Code of Conduct, is a risk to anyone online, is not conforming to WiredSafety standards of online communications, does not maintain confidentiality on volunteer personal information and non-public aspects of WiredSafety operations and curricula or otherwise does not fulfill WiredSafety expectations, in WiredSafety sole and absolute discretion.
Cyberstalking and Harassment teamOur Cyberstalking and Harassment team Division team members must also undergo a full background check, conducted by law enforcement officials. Since we work closely with federal and state law enforcement entities, our credibility depends largely on the reliability and credibility of our Cyberstalking and Harassment team members.
WiredSafety reserves the right to require our Cyberstalking and Harassment team members to provide additional information, complete extensive applications and take such personality exams as we deem prudent or law enforcement recommends or requires, from time to time, as a condition to working with Cyberstalking and Harassment team. Voice verification is also required.
Our Cyberstalking and Harassment team volunteers must complete certain classes prior to commencing patrol, and must be certified in certain matters, including familiarity with the child pornography and harassment laws, by WiredSafety.
WiredSafety reserves the right to require additional training and to require recertification, from time to time, for all Cyberstalking and Harassment team members.
TeenangelsTeenangels must be between the ages of 13 and 17 years old and must provide a letter of good standing from their school, as well as an original signed consent form, from their parents. The form may be printed out online, but must be submitted, with a hand-signed ink signature by the volunteer's parent or guardian. WiredSafety may request additional proof of parental consent in certain cases.
