The police letter

Information about police clearance letters

Volunteering with WiredSafetyIn the U.K. it is not possible to get a police letter, as such. You will actually need to go to your local police station and ask for a "Data Protection Form" to apply for a certificate/statement stating that you have no criminal convictions.

The U.K. Data Protection Certificate

You obtain a form from your nearest police station, which is called a Data Protection Form. You complete this and return it to the police station, together with a £10.00 fee and 2 forms of ID, driving license, bank statement, services bill, passport, etc.

The ID is noted and returned to you then and there. (They keep the £10!) It can then take 6-8 weeks to process and you are then sent a certificate/statement stating that you have no criminal convictions.

The form actually covers tons of different things, but for WiredSafety purposes, all that needs to ticked is the criminal record box.

An extra thing - if you ring the customer services for the police, it will all be explained to you (we hope!). You just ring any police station number (not 999!) and you will be put in contact with the right people.

If you have any questions about the form, if you ring any police forces' main switchboard and ask to speak to the Data Protection Officer, they will be able to assist. Each force is required to maintain a Data Protection Unit by law. Alternatively, any good civilian enquiry clerk at a police station should be able to help.

You must send the original certificate/statement, including your WiredSafety nickname and ID#, via air mail to:
