All the lectures we have given our children from the time they are very young about not talking to strangers aren't applicable online, where everyone is a stranger. A large part of the fun online is talking to people you've never met. But it can also be the riskiest.
Most of the dangers children face online come from strangers, not from information. Whenever children are allowed to interact one-on-one with someone you and they don't know in real life, they face special risks. The real danger online comes from meeting people offline.
But don't panic. Remember that the technology has not yet advanced to the stage of allowing a hairy-armed predator to reach into the modem and pull your child back through. In most cases, your child has to be a willing participant if there's going to be a face-to-face meeting. And that's how the real problems occur. Internet-related molestations don't result from predators sneaking into your home at night.
Most victims willingly meet predators in real life. They may not have known the predator's real age or intent, but they knew they were meeting someone offline. Many of the victims are love-struck teenagers. So education plays the most important role here. We need to teach our children about these risks so they can avoid them. Most of the time, that will make the biggest difference.
